My Favourite Books (My Top 5)

So as our Relax & Revive retreat is fast approaching TOMORROW!!! I am so excited and full of energy as I am right into prep mode.

As this retreat is about helping the guys that are coming to take a step away, to breathe, to allow the body to really relax, but most of all to allow their brains to have a break.

Whilst I have not placed a complete ban on mobile phones there will defiantly be the opportunity to indulge in a little bit of a digital detox as they are encouraged to stay off them as much as possible during the stay.

I too will also be going off grid for a few days as I fully immerse in giving all of my attention and focus to these beauties.

With modern smart phones and computers we are in a state where we are constantly ‘plugged in’, at least I know I am.

I did a little experiment not long ago to see just how much time I spend on my smart phone and it was scary!! Like I’m spending half my life on my phone!!!

And while technology is wonderful, I think we could all benefit from a little encouragement to unplug and switch off. Not only is it what I think, there is the science to back up the fact that a digital detox will improve stress levels and allow you more mental clarity and creativity.

I have already recommended that the guys should bring a book with them.

Whilst taking some time out, what better opportunity to absorb some information and inspiration. So today I wanted to share with you some of my favourite self development type books.

Getting the very most from the books you read, is not always about the amount of books you consume but, how much of those books you actually take in and then put into action.

Quite often I will read parts of the same book over and over again, sometimes I have many books on the go at once and just read them in chunks.

I also really enjoy using Audible, but I will save this topic for a separate blog. I defiantly prefer to have a physical book that I can flick back and forth over, make notes and actually hold in my hand.

So here are my top 5 books that I have found have had the biggest impact on me over recent years.

Loving What Is. – Byron Katie

Having learnt about this book from one of my mentors Paul Mort, this is a book I come back to over and over again. You don’t have to sit down and read all in one go you can just go back to the examples in there as and when you need them. It’s had such a huge impact on my life, like seriously I would credit it for helping me with the transformation of my marriage and though my husband hasn’t actually read it all, I know it has made some huge shifts for him too (that’s not my story to tell but it’s been a powerful one).

‘The work’ as Byron Katie calls it has now formed a BIG part of the process that I use within my Focused Mind, Fierce Body formula and it’s a book that I recommend to ALL of my coaching clients. It’s really simple in it’s process, but completely life changing when you are able to take a step back from what you believe is your reality and see more clearly that it’s actually just the reality YOU are creating. You get to look at your thoughts and start to question them so that you can then start to see things from a different perspective. When you do that, well, you just feel less pissed off at the world, realise that you are the one in control, and it gives you the ability to take that power back. So this has been a BIG one for me and a lot of people I know, so this one has to go at the top of my big 5.

You Can Heal Your Life – Louise Hay

This book teaches you the power of the human body and how it is constantly speaking to you. It also goes deep into how the thoughts, feelings and emotions are stored in the body and in turn manifested into disease and illness. Again this is a book that I refer back a LOT.

I think that this one will always be a little too woo woo for a lot of people (my husband for one, is having none of this), but what a wonderful notion it would be, if we really were that powerful that we could heal our bodies through shifting our thoughts and feelings to more positive ones?? I love this book and when I practice the tools in it gives me the sense of power and I love that feeling, which is why I always come back to it.

The Goddess Revolution – Mel Wells

This book is a must read for anyone wanting to work on their relationship with their eating habits. I recommend this book as it runs in line with a lot of practices that I use within the Focused Mind, Fierce Body Formula. Mel is a huge advocate for self love and helping women get off the diet bandwagon once and for all. I have taken a lot of inspiration from this book and I know so many people would benefit from the words on these pages.

The 5 Second Rule – Mel Robbins

This is one of my more recent purchases, in fact I did listen to this one on audible, Mel is great to listen to, highly motivating and an incredible story teller that I found I was really able to connect to. I have included it on the physical book list though as I would love to have a copy to refer back to. This book is perfect for anyone that may have been feeling stuck in any way shape or form.

Using the simple 5 second rule to 5,4,3,2,1 and rocket your ass into action. I have again drawn inspiration from this book particularly around shaping my morning routine. Love, love, loved this book and is something I will come back to when I am in need of a little boost.

How To Be Fucking Awesome – Dan Meredith

I have followed Dan for some time, and he is defiantly the kinda guy that likes to keep things real. That’s why I loved this book so much, it was super easy to read in fact I think I read it over a weekend but also has straight to the point actionable steps to being more awesome. And who doesn’t want to be more awesome?!?! He is bold, brash and defiantly the alpha male so if you are offended by a foul mouth then it’s probably not for you, but in saying that if you don’t like swearing you probably wouldn’t be reading my blog.

I have a ton of business and as I mentioned audio books that I love too, but I think I will do a whole other post on those. I love books, I love learning and constantly developing. It’s a huge part of what keeps me motivated and inspired, it’s what helps me shapes my own training programs and I truly believe if you want to become better at life or in your career, read more books. Simples!!!

I hope you enjoyed this blog, if you did please leave a comment so I know If you would enjoy more of this type of content. In fact I have literally just bought four new books that I’m excited to dive into.

And of course I would love you to share this post with the people that you know so they too can get a little dose of Emma style inspiration.
